This article is about the man, who, once was unable to afford a one Rupee bus ticket to travel to college, created a Multimillion Dollar industry with a vision of providing employment to rural students.
Mr. Hanmantrao Gaikwad the rural rockster, born in small village near Rahimatpur, in Satara District, Maharashtra, India. He was brilliant in studies, so his father decided to shift his family to Pune for better opportunities for Hanmantrao.
Life In Pune
His family used to live in 8 ft. x 10 ft. room in Pune. His family’s financial condition started degrading as all the earned hard money was used for his father’s treatment. For his father’s treatment his mother start working as a teacher.
Despite the hardships, Hanmantrao secured 88% in class 10. Like all the bright student, he was able to get admission for Diploma and took up Electronics as his major. In the second year though, he lost his ailing father to illness. His financial struggle had started to get worse. He was unable to buy as a one Rupee bus ticket to travel to college. Due to his poor financial condition he had been cycling 42kms to travel to college.
Birth of an Entrepreneur
Despite all the odds, he was able to clear his Diploma with high numbers and went to Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) for his Engineering(B.Tech). His mother took a loan of Rs. 15,000/- so that Hanmantrao can be admitted to Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT).
To complete his education he started funding his education on his own. This thought gave birth to an Entrepreneur. He started taking tutions of his classmates and other students. But soon he realised that teaching was not his passion.
Afterwards he started providing house painting, concreting pathways, repair works services and successfully completed his B.Tech Degree.
During his early days at VIT, Hanmantrao was inspired by the writings of Swami Vivekananda and Shivaji Maharaj. This gave birth to a non-profit trust named Bharat Vikas which used to help his college fellows to pay their fees who were unable to pay. This organisation used to collect the money from donors.
His career began in 1995. He was selected as graduate trainee engineer in design department of Telco, now as Tata Motors.
He was so determined that he was able to save huge costs for the company be making productive use of cables which were marked as scrap. This gave him recognition and soon made him famous.
Due to this many youth from his village started approaching him for jobs. He requested management for some jobs for these youths and management. The plant management agreed and offered them jobs but could not employ them on the company rolls.
Hanmantrao employed these youths in his trust and asked management to pay all the service charges to his trust. Management agreed his condition. Management also helped him to get a loan of Rs. 60 Lakhs from Tata Finance to buy cleaning equipments to start his In House cleaning services.
In year 2000, Hanmantrao formally resigned from Tata Motors and started focusing on his trust.
Birth Of BVG Group
He renamed his Bharat Vikas trust to Bharat Vikas Group as organisation.
Focus of the organisation was to generate employment, provide jobs to rural youths and skill development. The main work of the organisation was housekeeping. Due to his hard work and determination his organisation started growing.
He got opportunity to clean outer space of one of the building of Indian Parliament. Due to high-tech cleaning equipments he was able to clean the outer space of the building very well. Ministers noticed the work of his organisation and suggested him to apply for the tender for whole building. He got that tender and with that he was able to acquire the cleaning work of Parliament houses(Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha), Rashtrapati Bhavan(residence of Indian President), residence and office of Prime Minister of India and many more.
Bharat Vikas Group soon emerged as the leader in integrated service operations expanded into related facilities management operations and skill development in association with the Government of India.
Services provided by BVG group mechanised housekeeping, hospital maintenance, landscaping & gardening, logistics, transportation, civil and electrical work, ambulance services, industrial and urban waste management etc. to private and government institutions.
His organisation is the only one who was able to supply all equipped ambulance service in short period of time.
Currently his organisation is doing some research in agriculture sector to yield good production of crops and protect them without harming environment.
As of today his organisation values more than Rs 1,000 crore and provides employment to more than 65,000 people.
